Group Therapy for Addiction in Austin, Texas

A man shares his experience in a diverse support group, finding connection and understanding in recovery.

Who Group Therapy Helps & Why It Matters

A man talks openly with a therapist during a confidential mental health assessment and intake session.

Adults Struggling With Substance Use Disorders and Co‑Occurring Mental Health Issues

Substance use disorders, along with co-occurring mental health complications, significantly interfere with daily life. Group therapy sessions allow adults to open up about their experiences, feel validated, and work through difficult situations, thoughts, or feelings.

When Addiction Feels Isolating, Group Counseling Offers Connection and Support

Addiction can cause clients to feel alone or self-isolate. It’s not abnormal to feel like you’re going through substance abuse alone, but at Infinite Recovery, we show you that you have a community. In group therapy, you have a support system that listens to and understands your experiences.

What Our Austin Group Therapy Program Involves

Evidence‑Based Group Therapy Sessions Facilitated by Licensed Clinicians

Group therapy can use many different types of evidence-based approaches. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and family dynamics therapy are all different therapies we implement.

Integration of Individual Therapy, Group Counseling, and Holistic Care

It’s important to integrate different treatment approaches into your plan for well-rounded care. Individual and group therapy sessions have different benefits, both promoting healing and strengthening relationships with yourself and others.

During individual therapy, you learn to understand your thoughts and emotions, working through negative feelings. In group therapy, specifically, you can improve your communication skills and practice healthy ways of expression.

When pairing these approaches with holistic care, you develop healthy coping mechanisms you can turn to in difficult times. These coping skills can improve your physical health, spiritual health, social skills, emotional regulation, and other areas of wellness that helps sustain sobriety long-term and support overall personal growth.

Full Continuum: From Detox/Inpatient to IOP and Outpatient Group Support

How Group Therapy Supports Recovery

Peer Support and Shared Experiences Build Empathy, Community & Motivation

In group therapy, you develop healthy communication and listening skills with your peers. You learn to verbally express yourself openly in a safe, nonjudgmental environment and also offer support to others.

By listening to others and sharing experiences, you learn how to be there for others, encourage one another to overcome challenges, and celebrate achievements. A group rooted in recovery and sustaining sobriety motivates you to keep going even when times are tough.

You also learn from each other in group therapy. When you hear success stories from your peers, you can implement healthy strategies into your own journey and learn new ways to grow in recovery.

Structured Group Settings Provide Safe Space for Vulnerability and Growth

Infinite Recovery group therapy sessions are facilitated by a certified therapist who encourages group members to reflect on their journeys, answer prompts to assist in this process, and invite others to share. Our therapists also help group members process tensions or high emotions so all clients can learn to healthily solve problems.

We also keep groups small so clients can get to know each other on a deeper level and build meaningful connections.

Group Therapy Enhances Social Skills, Emotional Regulation, and Coping Strategies

Through group therapy, you practice healthy communication, problem-solving, taking accountability, and building relationships. Not only do you learn to express yourself in healthy ways with your peers and practice managing your emotions during the session, but you also learn how others overcome challenges and can practice implementing those strategies into your life.

What Sets Our Group Therapy Apart at Infinite Recovery

Trauma‑Informed and Evidence‑Based Modalities (CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing)

Our trauma-informed approach to care helps you develop a sense of safety. We implement this approach in all of our therapies, including group therapy sessions. Here, we encourage helpful behaviors, conversations, and spaces for you to grow individually and collectively with your peers.

We offer a variety of therapies depending on your needs. Among these evidence-based therapies are CBT, DBT, and motivational interviewing:

  • CBT: Helps clients identify, acknowledge, and healthily cope with challenging emotions or thoughts without resorting to substance use. You recognize the connection between unhelpful feelings and destructive habits, such as drug use.
  • DBT: Clients work towards self-acceptance while making active choices to better their decisions, lives, and overall well-being. DBT is most beneficial for clients struggling with emotional regulation.
  • Motivational Interviewing: With a counselor, clients are guided towards making helpful decisions. The self-awareness fostered promotes trust in oneself, belief in oneself, and motivation to keep progressing.

Family Involvement, Aftercare & Alumni Peer Support for Long‑Term Recovery

Group therapy extends beyond your peers in residential treatment.

Family has a place in the recovery process. Through family therapy, you learn healthy communication skills, understand how each other is affected by addiction, and strengthen relationships through mutual support and encouragement. Family involvement is critical in addiction recovery as your loved ones learn what you need to succeed long-term.

We also have aftercare programs to sustain progress. PHPs and IOPs, among other outpatient services, are great ways to stay on track without feeling overwhelmed by the transition into daily life. Infinite Recovery helps you ease into your sober lifestyle and be confident in your recovery.

While leading a sober life, we have opportunities for you to stay connected to our staff and alumni who are dedicated to their sober lifestyles. Like in group therapy, you share experiences with other alumni and support each other in sustaining sobriety and preventing relapse.

Continuity of Care — Same Treatment Team Through All Levels of Care

At Infinite Recovery, you have a personal treatment team consisting of a recovery specialist, a case specialist, and a personal counselor.

Through all levels of care, from detoxification to aftercare programs, your recovery team remains the same. You have 1:1 sessions with your team throughout your journey, making sure your plan is as effective as possible while keeping you connected to the same familiar faces.

Comfortable, Supportive Environment — Amenities, Privacy Options, Service Animal Accommodation

We value comfort and safety at Infinite Recovery.

Our campus is located in a beautiful, serene environment. Nature heals, and we encourage all of our clients to take advantage of that while in residential treatment. Here, you have a private space to heal in peace. A chaotic environment can make recovery stressful, but at Infinite Recovery, we remove as many distractions as possible.

In residential treatment, we have separate areas for male and female clients to respect each other’s privacy. We also have an on-site doctor for 24/7 care. That way, clients can stay focused on recovery without external factors inhibiting their success. We also have a swimming pool, on-site gym, and chef-prepared meals with individualized meal plans.

Common Signs It’s Time for Help

If you or a loved one is experiencing the following signs, addiction and/or mental health treatment might be the right path:

  • Feelings of isolation
  • Social anxiety
  • Lack of support
  • Mental health struggles
  • Repeated relapse

Group therapy, specifically, helps clients work through these struggles. Peer support encourages others to continue leading a healthy, sober life while also improving their social lives. Oftentimes, group therapy can be beneficial in early intervention cases as it addresses complications before they become overwhelming or life-consuming.

Frequently Asked Questions About Group Therapy & Addiction Treatment in Austin

Who leads the group therapy sessions at Infinite Recovery?

Group therapy is facilitated by a certified therapist, guiding the conversation and promoting healthy communication and problem-solving. The therapist might invite individuals to share or offer a prompt to the whole group, for example.

How does group therapy work alongside individual therapy and other treatment modalities?

Individual therapy is a good place for clients to share more specific details of their lives and experiences. When working through drug addiction, it can be difficult to open up at first and feel safe in a space with new people.

Group therapy slowly encourages clients to share as much or as little as they want, opening their recovery journeys to more than just themselves. They learn from others, practice healthy communication skills, and build a support network.

A combination of therapies and care aims to build on each other and address all areas of wellness.

What are the benefits of group therapy sessions compared to individual counseling alone?

While individual counseling is important in addiction recovery, group therapy provides other benefits. Group therapy connects people, developing a sense of community and belonging. It’s important to know that others are rooting for you, helping clients hold themselves accountable and sustain sobriety long-term.

Do you accept clients with co‑occurring mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, or trauma?

Yes. We offer treatment for clients struggling with alcohol and drug addiction, mental health disorders, or a combination of the two.

What does a typical group therapy schedule look like in your IOP or outpatient program?

IOP is split into morning and evening groups for flexibility. Three days a week for three hours, clients meet and take part in support groups and individual counseling sessions, family therapy, process groups, experiential groups, and educational groups, among other services.

Is family or loved‑one support available alongside group therapy?

Family therapy and support for your loved ones are crucial. Whether it’s in traditional therapy sessions with the client or external support groups with other families, Infinite Recovery ensures all family members are cared for in the process.

Can group therapy help if I struggle with social anxiety or feelings of isolation?

Group therapy is a space where you can grow comfortable and build relationships with your peers. Social anxiety and self-isolation are not uncommon when coping with substance abuse. Infinite Recovery encourages you to take part in group therapy to overcome that in a safe, guided, and comfortable setting.

How does Infinite Recovery support long-term sobriety beyond initial group therapy sessions?

Group therapy is just one service we offer. We offer various evidence-based and holistic care options that can be implemented into your treatment plan at any recovery stage. Our therapies are not exclusive to residential treatment, allowing you to grow and progress every step of the way.

What makes Infinite Recovery’s group therapy in Austin different from other treatment programs?

We keep group therapy sessions client-centered. Group sessions are small, so everyone can contribute and feel seen.
